Mouth Shield

Overcoming Common OAT Side Effects

Due to airflow through the mouth, some patients experience dry mouth leading to mild discomfort when using an oral appliance. Our patented silicone Mouth Shields have been designed to prevent dry mouth and excess saliva. A major additional benefit is the promotion of nasal breathing.

Research shows positive outcomes using a Mouth Shield with TAP

A small clinical trial conducted by Texas A&M College of Dentistry demonstrated that oral appliance therapy including a mouth shield can improve cognition in those with dementia. Specifically, the trial found that it improved cognition (MoCA scores) in 71% of those with mild cognitive impairment and half of those with Alzheimer’s disease, and decreased snoring in all study groups.

Recently, Texas A&M College of Dentistry conducted a study that revealed several positive outcomes associated with the use of the myTAP oral appliance with a mouth shield, particularly in improving periodontal and sleep-related parameters.

  • Improved sleep respiration parameters
  • Decreased snoring from 26.1% to 4.5%
  • Declines in mouth breathing
  • Reduction in periodontal pathogens

These findings underscore the potential of oral appliance therapy as a multi-disciplinary approach to improving oral and systemic health in this patient population.

How does the Mouth Shield work?

  • The Nylon flexTAP, flexTAP and myTAP posts are inserted into the Mouth Shield and sits inside the lips.
  • The dreamTAP and TAP 3 Mouth Shield is attached to the hardware and sits inside the lips, reducing flow through the mouth and promoting nasal breathing. Instructions are included on how to attach the Mouth Shield to the hardware.
